health care reform

Maybe I have been living in a smoke free environment too long, but something is VERY wrong…

I just received advertisement in the U.S. Mail - that offers me special ‘rewards’ on cigarettes from Marlboro.

WHAT?! In the mail? Children bring in the mail every day!

Ok, that was hard enough for me to deal with. I mean after all: Haven’t we already established that cigarettes are dangerous to your health? Wasn’t there some kind of law against excessive advertising of cigarettes to minors?

I guess putting special offers on cigarettes into every mailbox across America is ok!

GET THIS! The Surgeon General has a new ‘warning’ about cigarettes! It reads like this:

SUEGEON GENERAL’S WARNING: Cigarette smoke contains Carbon Monoxide…

WHAT!?!

Since when did cigarettes stop being dangerous to your health? Has the Surgeon General forgotten that cigarettes are deadly for EVERYONE?

If Obama wants to do something about health care in this country, he should start with highlighting how deadly cigarettes are - since the Surgeon General obviously has a different agenda!

As my daughter would say… Surgeon General - FAIL!

On Tuesday, the Senate health committee voted 12-11 in favor of a two-page amendment, courtesy of Republican Tom Coburn (OK Senator) which would require all Members of Congress and their staff members to enroll in any new government-run health plan.

Congressman John Fleming has proposed an amendment that would require Congressmen and Senators to take the same health care plan that they would force on us. (Under proposed legislation they are exempt.)

Congressman Fleming is encouraging people to go to his Website and sign his petition.  The process is very simple.  I have done just that at:   http://vur.me/s/health-care-reform

Senator Coburn and Congressman Fleming are both physicians. Regardless of your political beliefs, it sure seems reasonable that Congress should have exactly the same medical coverage that they impose on the rest of us.

Congressman Fleming Discusses Health Care

Please urge as many people as you can to do the same!

A new federal excise tax of one penny per 12-ounce soda could generate more than $1.5 billion dollars per year, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest - a nutrition and food safety watchdog group.

A steeper tax of one penny per ounce could raise roughly $16 billion a year—an amount that would make a serious down payment on a comprehensive health care reform bill.

CSPI estimates that taxing soda at that amount would also reduce consumption by 13 percent overall and perhaps more among children, which would help slow the obesity and diabetes epidemics.

The state of Massachusetts, which is weighing a sales tax of 8 percent on sugary drinks, could raise $105 million.

The CSPI  launched a web-based Liquid Candy Tax Calculator to show policymakers, activists and media exactly how much money states and the federal government could raise in this way.

For more information on the movement to tax soft drinks check out the press release from CSPI at http://www.cspinet.org/new/200906171.html

Personally, I agree reducing sugar consumption is a good first step for better health.  A tax on soft drinks would also provide the much needed funding to cover the cost of health care that the U.S. is destined to bear. But then what?

How does someone “clean-up” the garbage left in the body as a result of poor diet?
