I just read an article in the clinical Advisor (www.ClinicalAdvisor.com) that says vitamin C reduces Gout. Pretty impressive results.

Seems there is a large, long-term study examining the relation between vitamin C intake through food and supplements and gout risk. 46,994 men took part in the ongoing Health Professionals Follow-up Study. Most importantly, None of the men had a history of gout at baseline.

For 20 years, these men were studied.

In the last follow-up, 1,317 confirmed cases of gout developed. 20 years ago, those men did not have gout, so it’s important to realize that you MIGHT get gout.

Men consuming more than 1,500 mg per day of Vitamin C had a 45% lower risk for gout (relative risk: 0.55) than men who consumed less than 250 mg of vitamin C per day.

Men between those two extremes also benefited, with fewer gout cases observed among the 500-999 mg per day group (relative risk: 83) and the 1,000-1,499 mg per day group (relative risk: 0.66).

For more information, you can refer to Arch Intern Med. 2009;169:502-507 where the authors noted that increasing vitamin C intake may help prevent gout.

So what’s the best way to increase your vitamin C intake? Fruit and other “bio-available” sources are consider the best. But what does “bio-available” mean?

Wikipedia says bioavailability is a measurement of the extent of a therapeutically active drug that reaches the systemic circulation and is available at the site of action. In laymens terms that means that a vitamin reaches the blood stream and eventually the cells of the body at optimum strength.

Here’s what you need to know about vitamin C: Unless the vitamin C that you are taking contains the proper amount of Ascorbigen, it may not be very helpful to you at all.

Ascorbigen is a tannic acid creating a bound form of ascorbic acid which provides a protective barrier for the Vitamin C. This protective barrier allows Vitamin C to reach the cells of the body.

For the best source of Vitamin C that I have found, you should take a look at Zrii. Amount it’s many other health benefits, it is formulated to provide an extraordinary level of bioavailable vitamin C.  It is so impressive that the world famous Chopra Center for well-being has chosen Zrii to be the only product that they endorse.
